PETER FLOWER CENTENARY GARDEN

This wildflower garden was planted to celebrate the centenary of Broughton Parish Council. The garden can be found nestling between the Whiteshoot II development and Fripps Acre Playground.  It is dedicated to Lt. Col. Peter Flower whose bequest made it possible.

 

The garden was designed and planted by members of the village community and completed in September 1994.

 

Since then, the garden has become a quiet haven for wildlife and is especially pleasant to sit in during the summer months.

Development of the Garden

 

The old English apple trees were each adopted, planted and cared for by members of Broughton Youth Club. The Winter Berry Border and Hedgerows were planted by children from Broughton Primary School.

 

Wild Flower areas were planted and are cared for by families and individuals from all over the village co-ordinated by Broughton Conservation Group. The Whiteshoot Wildlife Garden was created by Broughton young people as a Test Valley School project.

 

Management advice was been given by Charles H Flower MA and the Hampshire Wildlife Trust. Our native chalk grassland flora and fauna are becoming increasingly rare. For this reason this garden is managed in a way that benefits wildlife. You will find areas left unmown until the plants have seeded and provided food and shelter for the insects and birds that depend on them.
